well, hello.
The summer is winding down, and I’m shifting gears a bit. Here’s what’s up:
- back in dance class : I’m doing two residencies at the Etobicoke School of the Arts and at Interplay. This is not unusual (Interplay is a north-Toronto dance school that I used to play at MANY years ago. Their schedule and mine worked out this year quite nicely, so I’m back…), but I have decided to play dance classes with a Roland Handsonic this year. So far, it’s a lot of fun, and makes all my old licks sound new.
- film improvs : Sept 14 I’m playing with Chip Yarwood, Celina Carroll and Kevin Cooke in the Gladstone Hotel ballroom improvising to a whole whack o’ art films. I’ve gushed about these players before, just fabulous, unique musicians whom I get to share the stage with way too infrequently.
- Starry Nights, 2.0 : Oct12 Orleans, Newmarket 9pm-12am. Jeff and Dagmar are switching things up, and adding lots more originals to the band repertoire. Looks like I’ll be playing percussion more than drums, too. I’m looking forward to the new material, Jeff is a great writer and used to contribute some great tunes to the band back in our old HEARSAY days in the 90s.
- CPZ rides again! : Oct 20, Somewhere There, Toronto 8pm-10pm (this is trombonist Scott Thomson’s new venue). It’s exciting to get a chance to play with Rob and Ed again, it’s been too long.
- on the road : No out-of-town gigs right now, but those of my readers in the Highway Patrol will find me in NYC next weekend seeing Paul Motian (w/ Frisell and Lovano) and in Columbus, OH at the beginning of N0vember at PASIC, hob-knobbing with drums, drummers, and more.
