blast from the (recent) past

I visited the long-neglected drumLAB blog and found a few dead links to mp3s. I dug around in my iTunes and found the music, one piece which I have re-posted for your enjoyment:

chris cawthray + michael occhipinti

untitled (part ii)

cc: drums, keyboard/laptop  / mo: electric guitar

what five dollars will get you.

March 26, 2007 · Leave a Comment

FYI, the mp3 store @ chriscawthray.com has had some pricing changes. Every album, regardless of length is now $5 each. I have the good fortune of collaborating with a lot of very talented musicians, so there’s a tremendous amount of music to be heard for a reasonable price. Check it out.

n.b. I am working on getting my solo DVD transferred to iPod-ready video, once I do, that’ll be $5 too.

tax

March 24, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Apart from some dance classes last night and today I have devoted my weekend to doing our taxes. Fun. Even more exciting since I lost all my saved data in the iBook accident, so I’ve had to rebuild it all from bank statements and piles of receipts.

All of this work has revealed that 2006 was a pretty decent year in the world of making money playing drums. Of course, it’s not like I actually noticed, because 2006 was also a pretty decent year in the world of spending-any-extra-cash-that-should-have-been-saved-on-things-that-seem-to-have-vanished. ;)

Anyway, I’m logging on to eFile tomorrow, and then I’ll let the government have their way with me. (let’s keep our fingers crossed for a refund!)

so it’ll be cc4 then…

March 19, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Ah, the best laid plans….

Eric Boucher is in the midst of a family emergency that has taken him away on an airplane, so the much-anticipated cc3 release party is having an overnight makeover. While our thoughts are with EB and his family, bring yourself out for:

chris cawthray quartet

chris cawthray/drums

mike pelletier/bass

rob price/guitar

ed zankowski/tenor sax

We’ll play a nice long set from 8:30 till past 10, Rob’s tunes, my tunes, covers. It’ll be great fun.

In recognition of this change, the cover is now $5 and you still get a copy of the record. That’s a deal in any town.

Also, don’t forget that CPZ hits Pepperjack Cafe in Hamilton from 7pm-9pm on Wednesday March 21.

(data) gone… just like a train

March 13, 2007 · Leave a Comment

I got the diagno$i$ for my iBook. The HD is dead and needs replacing, and as of yet no data recovery has been possible from the damaged drive. This means that a lot of stuff has been lost, at least until I can take the drive to a serious forensic data service.

Thankfully, no family photos or my music collection have been ditched (they were all on external drives), but I have lost my address book and calendar I would love to hear from everyone so I can re-build my address book. So, if you’re so inclined, send me an email with your vitals.

What’s our lesson today kids? Well, not dropping one’s laptop is a good one, but more practical: BACKUP YOUR STUFF. I’ll be buying a new external drive for this purpose ASAP.

Vitamin C

March 12, 2007 · Leave a Comment

After the cc3 gig last Thursday, I managed to drop my iBook on the floor of my house, rendering it inoperable (it’s currently in service, I hope to have a diagno$i$ tomorrow). I’m computing from a Pentium II laptop, which only makes me miss my iBook more.

At any rate, I wanted to post to catch up. Yesterday I performed about 40 minutes of improvisation with Paul Dutton, John Oswald and David Sait. It was some of the most exciting minutes I’ve had in performance in quite some time. To improvise with guys like Dutton and Oswald is a chance to swim with the big fish; they DO this, all the time. They each have their own sonic languages, and these aren’t gimmicks or licks; it’s years of digging through and beyond conventional playing and creative interaction. I really hope I didn’t bore them, I know I had fun. I hope I can do it again sooner than later.

cc3 starts at Canyon Creek Square One this week (wednesdays 6-9) and it’ll be myself, Eric Boucher and Colin Campbell until mid-April (when Mike Pelletier returns, replacing Colin). Fans of the “other CC” fret not (haha, Colin plays guitar, fret not, haha). In late May I’ll be doing double-duty on Wednesday nights as cc3 is actually going to do two house gigs (one in Vaughan and the other at Square One). I’m going to split my time equally between each gig (I’ll be at both locations alternating weeks) and my good friend and esteemed colleague David Monis will be shadowing me all summer. The trios themselves will likely be Mike Pelletier and playerTBA at Square One and Eric and Colin in Vaughan. With any luck, Tuesday nights in Scarborough will return and cc3 will be plumped out with mid-week madness all summer.

The big hype these days is March20. You gotta be there. Gladstone Art Bar 8pm 1214 Queen Street West in Toronto. How can you miss it? CPZ + cc3+(pamplemousse)= that’s a lot of Vitamin C!

See you soon. Pray for my iBook. ;)

coming soon to a cc3 gig near you…

The DISCREVOLT cards are in. These are “credit” cards that can be redeemed online for mp3 downloads. You can only get them at our gigs, so come on down! (or, order the mp3s direct at chriscawthray.com).

The cards will sell for $8, which gives you 15 download credits (the (pamplemousse) album takes 14 credits in total, so you have one left for other shopping). For a limited time, there will be a +CD-R edition (a DISCREVOLT card packaged with an audio CD-R of the record, but not including the download-only bonus track) available for $10.

See you (and your money) at the gigs!
